THE LATEST UPDATE

June 26. Yesterday the conference finished its work. Some more details in the "Tunguska news".

JUNE 19. Unfortunately due to some unexpected problems with financing the conference, the situation with it is not very good. To summ up. As I know, just a small local conference is planned in Krasnoyarsk on June 29. Not much things (nothing?) in Vanavara. And a trip to the Tunguska epicenter is abandoned (but those who are interested to visit the epicenter probably could do this later in the summer - please contact us).
As the conference in Moscow was planned as "self-funded" from the early beginning, so it is in a better state. Yesterday we have a final (I hope) organizational meeting of the conference. It was decided that despite an "astronomical institute is for astronomical interpretations", the prevailing opinion was that "geophysical Tunguska" session must be in the astronomical institute too. And it will be on the afternoon of the first day, parallel/simultaneous with a session on "calculations of the Tunguska spacebody and asteroid strike danger" in another hall.
A program of the conference is here in Russian. The opening of the conference is at 10 am, June 24 (a registration is since 9 am) in the Astronomical Institute named after P. Shternberg, Moscow, Universitetskii prospekt 13 (on a territory of the Moscow State University). The end of the conference is on the evening of June 25.

Please, pay attention that most of the info below is outdated (due to unexpected problems with financing of the conference), so please contact us for details.

95-TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE TUNGUSKA EVENT
(TUNGUSKA 2003)
INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE

CONTENTS

1. GENERAL INFORMATION

In 2003 there will be 95-th anniversary of the 1908 Tunguska event. Despite numerous hypotheses, there is still no consensus on "what it was". The hypotheses vary from a meteorite fall, and a gas outburst to an "alien spaceship" (see, for example, Tunguska 98, and Tunguska 2001 conferences).
Thus due to large interest in scientific and general public, administration of Evenkia has decided to organize, and hold an international conference "95-th Anniversary of the Tunguska event" (i.e. "Tunguska 2003") in cities of Krasnoyarsk, and in a settlement of Vanavara (which is about 70 km from the Tunguska epicenter). Due to large importance of holding Tunguska conference in Moscow, in there a special session of the Tunguska 2003 conference is being organized by international organizing committee with support of Administration of Evenkia and some other organizations.
And, of course, a trip to the Tunguska epicenter is planned.
So if even you are not a scientist, but just interested to visit the epicenter as a tourist, for example, anyway you are welcome!
Besides Tunguska, topics of the conference include related items, i.e other similar (whatever origin, as we don't know Tunguska's origin) natural events (including on other scales).
Also a cultural program is to take place.
Publication of Proceedings of the conference is planned.

The expences can be varied, for example, if you ask for luxury accomodation/apartments, or, in opposite, are ready to settle in the modest ones.
Also you don't need to pay the conference fee if your main goal is to visit the Tunguska epicenter, and you will not attend the Moscow session [hall/room] of the conference (relaxing or visiting Moscow sights instead, or coming Moscow later, for example).

2. PLACE AND TIME

The Tunguska 2003 conference will begin with a session in Moscow, a capital of Russia, and then there will be other sessions in Krasnoyarsk, Siberia, and in a settlement of Vanavara, Evenkia.

Planned dates of the conference are on June 24-25, 2003 in Moscow, June 27-28 in Krasnoyarsk, and since June 29 till July 3 in Vanavara and for the trip to the Tunguska epicenter (see below).
A few days long trip to the Tunguska epicenter right after the conference is planned, as it was during Tunguska 95, and Tunguska 98, and Tunguska 2001 conferences. If you want to better understand what does the trip mean, you can look at some pictures.
And, of course, you can participate just in any part of the conference (just in Moscow, if you are not interested to visit the epicenter; or just in the trip to the epicenter, if you are a tourist, for example).
